Wembley Arena, Sunday – The Final

Well. Well. WELL! It’s 6:01am on Monday 18th as I’m writing this, after about four hours of sleep and a gazillion dreams/reliving Sunday 17th. What can I say, I mean, I’m still in shock. LOL! Any closer and I’d practically be sitting on his face. As you can see from some of the pictures below. When looking at them, by the way, keep in mind that it’s not that easy taking pictures of a man that doesn’t waste any time standing still. Especially when you’re in the process of thinking, “Any closer, mate, and I’ll climb up there to ya.” lol. (Yes, I’m officially twelve again…) Also, the fucking delay on the digital camera fucked up some great shots.

Anyway, he started by reminding us that we were at the last gig, that it had been 49 shows and this being the last one was quite sentimental for “us on the stage”. (What do you reckon it was for us?)

So, the audience… insane. Especially where we were sitting/standing. I’ve never encountered such madness and screaming and whatever else. It was like bloody Elvis was up there, and we were a bunch of teenagers from the 50s. In that respect, I think I (we) did very well – all we did was gawk innocently (ahem) at him when he would come over to our side (which he seemed to be all the time), exchange “oh holy Jesus” looks and *waving hand over face to stop overheating*. So I didn’t go insane, but I did feel like I was twelve, seeing my favourite popstar in concert for the first time. Yeah, it felt like the very first time. We were placed just in between the end of the stage and the platforms on the side, so we got the best of both when he came to the ends and sang to us. And man did he come there a lot. (Could have something to do with the fact that Paul McCartney was sitting just above our heads, I suspect – but he (George, not Paul) was standing by us a lot, grinning, smiling, pointing at random audience members…)

I couldn’t even begin to tell you which song he performed without his glasses, but at one point he apologised for blowing his nose and simply came back without’em. It was beautiful (“…it was, and you know it. Mmmh!”), he looked stunning, never sounded better ever and though still had his little cold you couldn’t tell if your life depended on it. He said – at some point – that even though this may be the last show for now, because of how great this tour had been, it would be happening again very soon.

As far as set-list, it included all the usual ones, including “My Mother Had A Brother” (and “the fuckers at Fleet Street” speech), “An Easier Affair” and… behold… “Last Christmas”. No Andrew, though. What he said was, “I’m doing a song for you that I hate performing, because I love you.” Or something to that effect. Seeing him walk around with “snow” in his hair was just adorable, seeing him standing in front of us getting snowed down – up close – was even better. When he demanded the lights came on and he took his sunglasses off, praising us all… I was practically on cloud 4719. After “Freedom” he practically ran off the stage – very quickly – and looked highly emotional.

Walking away – with confetti in places no confetti has ever been before – was emotional for all of us. A mixture of “I can’t believe that” and “it was the last fucking show – now what?” was filling the areas in and around the arena. My feet were hurting like hell after standing up for two hours straight, my ears were ringing, my back was aching like a bitch, I’ve DEFINITELY caught his cold – and yet I don’t think I could feel more fulfilled. It was beautiful, it was, and he knows it – but he’s not wasted here, cos he’s a star.

Until next time – check out the pictures.
